What to know about this program?
A healthy nation is a wealthy nation. But for the nation to be healthy, a functional health service delivery system and well-trained health service workers are a prerequisite. In Uganda, both elements require urgent attention. In particular, there is a severe shortage of professionals in the critical area of health records and information management, yet this function helps with collection and management of accurate and up-to-date health data that informs policy formulation, planning and delivery of health service. Moreover, the recent population census indicates that the majority of Ugandans are young meaning that health services are a growing industry and the need for the services of professional medical workers can only keep growing to keep pace with the health needs of the growing and expanding population. It goes without saying that job opportunities do exist in the health service sector—for example in clinics, drug shops, dispensaries, pharmacies, hospitals, health-oriented NGOs, civil society organizations, government ministries and agencies as well as research and consulting firms and agencies. While job opportunities abound, the number of qualified people serving in the sector is not growing at the same pace. This programme is formulated to respond to this crisis. Students will be trained and provided with relevant knowledge and skills to manage medical records and health information departments, grow the pool of medical health personnel and contribute to the improvement of policy formulation, planning and delivery of health services in Uganda
